Trump is eager to take a tough stance on climate, which has been one of his most consistent criticisms of his predecessor.
The president has pledged to cut carbon emissions and has called climate change a “hoax” by the Obama administration.
On Tuesday, Trump said in a tweet that he’s “ready to take down China and take down the phony climate change.”
He also announced that the United States will be “taking on China in space.”
Trump and his top adviser, Steve Bannon, said in March that they would make the United Nations an issue in the 2016 election.
China’s new president, Xi Jinping, has repeatedly said he wants to see the United State be a partner on global climate change.
Trump has also called global warming a hoax and has promised to renegotiate the Paris climate agreement, which was adopted by 195 countries in 2015.
